Hybrids of multidimensional nanomaterials often lead to hierarchical composites that combine the advantages of each component producing multifunctional materials with exceptional properties. In this presentation, we present a novel green process for synthesis of graphene-metal oxide nanohybrids with well dispersed < 10 nm metal oxide particles. The structure of the graphene-metal oxide nanocomposite and dispersion of the metal oxide on the graphene surface are investigated using XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET surface area, and TGA. Compared to the conventional solvo/hydrothermal method, our new process is not only simpler, environmentally benign, and requires less energy and time, but also yields nanocomposite with superior performance compared to graphene, metal oxide, and graphene-metal oxide nanocomposite prepared by the multi-step hydrothermal method as demonstrated by the superior photocatalytic activities.
