The University of Manchester has received nearly $200m in capital investment for the research and commercialization of graphene and other 2D materials. Building on its world class research base, the National Graphene Institute (NGI) was opened in April 2015 to collaborate with other research centres and industry, to develop and demonstrate the scale up of graphene products and processes from the lab.  In 2017, the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) will open. It is a $95m capital investment that will complement the National Graphene Institute (NGI) and will be the manufacturing test-bed for the industrial application of graphene and 2-D material process engineering and scale-up. It will be the place where we will develop graphene and 2-D material applications, attract additional business interest and investment, develop intellectual property (IP) from basic science projects and applications, train the new generation of engineers and scientists for high-tech industry, as well as linking with international programs for research such as the €1 billion European Union Graphene Flagship.
