Chair Professor of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Germany (since 2007); Head of the Department of Nanobiomaterials at the Max Bergmann Center of Biomaterials; Founding Director of the Dresden Center for Computational Materials Science; member of the King's College London–TU Dresden TransCampus. He completed his undergraduate and master's studies at the University of Genoa, Italy, and received his Ph.D. in 1997 through a joint program between Genoa and Hamburg. He was formerly a visiting scholar at MIT and the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, and led a Volkswagen Foundation research group at the University of Regensburg from 2003 to 2007. His research covers molecular and organic electronics, bionanotechnology, nanostructures, and computational methods, with outstanding contributions to the transport and modeling of systems such as quantum dots, nanowires, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. He has published more than 450 papers (over 25,000 citations on Google Scholar, with an H-index of approximately 66), has incubated several high-tech spin-off companies including quantUP, smartNT, and biconex, and has led projects funded by the EU, DFG, BMBF, and the Volkswagen Foundation totaling approximately 30 million euros. He is scheduled to share his research on computational materials science and bionanointerfaces of two-dimensional materials such as graphene.
