Liu Zhongfan, born in October 1962 in Jiutai, Jilin Province, is a physical chemist, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (elected in 2011), and Academician of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS). He is currently a Boya Chair Professor at Peking University, Director of the Center for Nanoscience and Technology at Peking University, and President of the Beijing Graphene Institute. He also serves as a Standing Committee Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Vice Chairman of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiusan Society. He graduated from Changchun University of Technology in 1983, went to Japan to study in 1984, received his master's degree from Yokohama National University in 1987 and his doctoral degree from the University of Tokyo in 1990, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Tokyo and the Institute for Molecular Science of Japan. He returned to teach at Peking University in 1993 and was promoted to professor in the same year. He has long been engaged in research on graphene and other nanocarbon materials, two-dimensional atomic crystal materials, and nanochemistry, and has made a series of pioneering and leading contributions in the field of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth methodology for graphene and carbon nanotubes. In recent years, he has achieved breakthroughs in ultra-clean graphene, super graphene glass, carbon-based optical fibers, and super graphene-covered materials, and founded the Beijing Graphene Institute (BGI) to explore a three-tier innovation system of "basic research—technology development—industrial incubation." He has published more than 750 academic papers, applied for more than 200 Chinese invention patents, and edited and published 12 monographs, translations, and popular science books. He has received the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Special Prize, the 8th Nano Research Award, the IGA Graphene Industry Lifetime Honor Award, and the China Graphene Industry Navigator Award, among others. He will deliver a plenary lecture at this conference.
